About the programme, sersd is a 2-year Masters programme that aims to enhance students' knowledge of the complex interactions between ecological and social systems. Applications, the programme starts in the autumn each year and application deadline is 15 January for all students. These activities range from high-level UN dialogues to local resilience assessments. Something that is actually good for the environment, something that makes a difference, said another. The Stockholm Resilience Centre's engagement in science-policy-practice activities has increased steadily over the years, partly as a result of the increasing number of invitations for centre researchers to participate in activities. The Master's programme, social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development (sersd) received the highest marks on all points in an evaluation by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslerämbetet). The evaluation is based on five assessment points, and the sersd-programme received the highest review on all five. The researchers found strong indications that the children not only developed sympathy for salamanders but also increased their concern and care for nature. Link to publication, request publication, based on interviews and observations of the children while helping the salamanders the researchers found that the project helps create a more meaningful connection with nature which remains years after the children take part in the project. However, only three programmes were considered to be of "very high quality and one of them was the centre's own sersd programme. Stephan Barthel and, matteo Giusti together with colleagues from University of Gävle and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. This was confirmed by the teacher in charge who reported that the children appreciated connecting with living organisms during authentic situations. The project has attracted the attention of researchers from Sweden who are curious to see if the activity has any deeper implications on childrens relation with nature. The Swedish Higher Education Authority has evaluated 39 programmes in environmental science similar subjects, at 15 different universities. Read the full review here (in Swedish) "This is of course great news. A study into it has recently been published in the journal.
Its fun to feel that you have actually done something important. The programme attracts top international students and courses are firmly embedded in the research at the centre. As the children crawl, walk and run around and explore the features of the environment around them, they overcome different challenges, build environmental sensitivity and personal competence.
